Compilation of all known Rolex Military Submariners Ref 5513 & 5513/17

Compilation of all known Rolex Military Submariners Ref 5513 & 5513/17

Researched and Written by KKC 17th December 2021

Colour Coding

Updated 15th June 2022. Three watch added. (in Red)

Missing Picture, if anyone has access to the picture, I would really appreciate if it could be provided. Thank you. (in Blue)

Serial numbers unavalable but information being researched. If anyone has access to the serial numbers and more information, I would really appreciate if it could be provided. Thank you. (in Green).

This is an ambitious project and it may never be complete but its a start. Please feel free to add or comment by sending an email. Serial numbers will be in chronological order, provenance and pictures will be added where available.

With the prospects of finding fresh to the market Rolex Military Submariners diminishing serverly the new trend for dealers seems to be to buy Non Full Spec Military Submariners for their parts and put together a Full Spec.

If done correctly and with full disclosure, then I see nothing wrong with this practise. I would rather have one perfect Full Spec than 2 Non Full Spec.

The 1st million dollar Rolex Military Submariner is on the horizon or maybe even nearer.

The project will be continuously update as more information is received or discovered. Updates will be printed in red.

When former SBS (Special Boat Services) officers of the British Royal Navy travelled to Iran to train the Shah's elite soldiers, some of the Iranian soldiers wanted the exact same equipment used by the British. Consequently, a small number of Iranian Ref. 5513s were ordered from Rolex as part of a larger order of Submariners for the British military. The outside case backs were marked with the military broad arrow sign, MOD issue number and unit number. As well as being marked with the serial number 3826402 between the lugs, the inside case back of the presently is marked with the same serial number.

Rolex's records show that watch with serial 3826526 was supplied to Her Majesty's Dockyard Rosyth, UK in 1976 and originally had case back number 626/76.

The case back of the present watch is number 444/76 and was originally fitted to watch number 3826414 which itself was supplied to H.M. Dockyard, Portsmouth in 1976. It seems likely, therefore, that the two case backs were accidentally swapped when serviced by the Ministry of Defence.

Previously offered at Auction 10th May 2009 Sothebys Lot 72 Sold 25k CHF. Has been upgraded with military hands replacing civilian mercedes hands.
